Living the Instant Life

NoGrey_Blog_Tips_Instagram01

Gone are the days when living “the good life” was sufficient.

Now, not only do we want to live “the good life” but we want this “goodness” to be instant. Living the instant life has superseded the relaxed life. No longer are our days filled with time consuming activities such as siestas, long walks on the beach, slow food, hour long phone calls to our besties or tediously long games of chess. Instead we want to eat fast Mexican food (most likely served from a oh-so-funky food van in some park in Brunswick), we want to play super fast, record breaking ultimate solitaire on our iPhones, chat quickly to our buds on Facebook and only sleep when we literally drop dead– after a super fast sprint around the block listening to the pumped up version of Adele’s ‘Set fire to the Wind’. Writing long and overly descriptive diary entries no longer seems a priority, instead we want to post mirror pics of our latest fashion find on Tumblr or Facebook, begging the all-important question “does my bum really look big in this?” We want to know what all of our friends are doing at every minute of the day – what they eat, what they see, what they say, who they see (preferably in the form of a vintage-y filtered happy snap taken on their phone). And that, my friends, is where Instagram comes in.

Some of you may be thinking, what on heaven and earth is Instagram? My answer to that is “get with the program grandma, where have you BEEN?”

Instagram is only the coolest App around. It currently sits happily in the top 5 Apps on my iPhone, right next to Facebook, Tumblr and a funky little App called CatLovers– but that’s for another time.
According to the creators, Instagram is…

“It’s a fast, beautiful and fun way to share your life with friends through a series of pictures.
Snap a photo with your iPhone, choose a filter to transform the look and feel, send to Facebook, Twitter or Flickr – it’s all as easy as pie. It’s photo sharing, reinvented.”

So, Instagram is exclusive in the way it is only available to those who own an iPhone– but let’s face it’s only a matter of time before the Android copy-cats come up with a compatible version. And for those anti-smart-phone individuals– you don’t know what you are missing out on.

Instagram is becoming a bit of an entity of its own. Little sites and business are popping up all over the place, flogging magnetized versions of your happy snaps (Stickygram.com), posters, stickers, mini books, mini prints (we all know mini is the new maxi) and for those with über small fingers and exceptionally good eyesight (this one’s not for grandma) a teeny tiny book (Printstagr.am). You can even sport your vintage pics on a goofy tee-shirt, sip tea out of an Instagram mug (Instamaker.com) or admire your shots every month with an Instagram-y calendar (Keepsy.com).

Bloggers, fashion boutiques, design firms (No Grey included!), cafés, indie chicks and sk8er bois are all getting Insta-fied, and I urge you to get in on the action. Like everything in our new fast-and-furious lives, Instagram probably has a life-span similar to a gold-fish’s memory, so lets make the most of this super-fun fad.
